Flashing folder with a question mark?
The Mac can't find a disk to start from. On older Macs that usually means the drive or its cable has failed. Your files may still be readable.

What to do right now
- Don't erase the diskDisk Utility's erase or a fresh install destroys what's left.
- Switch it off if it clicksA clicking drive gets worse with every attempt.
- Find your model numberThe A-number on the base tells us which part is likely to have failed.
Common causes
- Failed hard driveVery common on iMacs and MacBook Pros from 2009–2015.
- Failed drive cableMacBook Pro 13-inch 2009–2012 SATA cables wear out.
- Failed SSD moduleApple's removable SSDs in 2013–2017 Macs.
- Storage fault on the boardOn newer Macs where the SSD is soldered to the board.
How we fix it
We test the drive, cable and board separately. If the drive has failed, we copy it sector by sector and recover your files from the copy, then fit a new SSD.
Questions
Before you book
Will I lose my files?
Usually not. In most cases the data is still on the Mac. We recover it before or as part of the repair, and we tell you before doing anything that could affect it.
Are you Apple?
No. We are an independent repair and data recovery workshop with Apple-certified technicians. Unlike a board replacement, our component-level repair keeps your original board and your data.
