What to do right now
- Switch it offDon't keep plugging it in to see if it's come back.
- Don't run recovery softwareSoftware can't fix a mechanical fault and the extra reading can scratch the platters.
- Don't open the driveDust on the platters makes recovery much harder.
Common causes
- Failed read/write headsThe classic click. The heads can no longer read the platters.
- Stuck motorThe drive beeps or buzzes but doesn't spin up.
- Controller board failureThe drive is silent and not detected at all.
- Bad sectorsThe drive slows to a crawl and files won't open.
How we fix it
We assess the drive, repair what's needed to read it, and image it sector by sector to a healthy drive. Your files are recovered from the copy, never from the failing original.
Questions
Before you book
Will I lose my files?
Usually not. In most cases the data is still on the Mac. We recover it before or as part of the repair, and we tell you before doing anything that could affect it.
Are you Apple?
No. We are an independent repair and data recovery workshop with Apple-certified technicians. Unlike a board replacement, our component-level repair keeps your original board and your data.
