Fault · Mac repair & data recovery
Mac on but the screen is black?
You can hear it, the keyboard lights up or the fans spin, but there's nothing on the screen. Often your files are fine and the fault is in the display path.

What to do right now
- Try an external displayIf a monitor works, the Mac and your files are fine.
- Back up while it worksUse an external display to copy your files off first.
- Don't press on the screenPressure on a cracked panel makes it worse.
Common causes
- Backlight circuitA blown backlight fuse or driver. Shine a torch at the screen and you may see a faint picture.
- Display flex cableThe 2016–2017 MacBook Pro Flexgate fault, and worn cables on other models.
- Graphics chipKnown failures on 2008 and 2011 MacBook Pros and some iMacs.
- Cracked panelDamage behind the glass that isn't obvious from the outside.
How we fix it
We trace the fault to the backlight circuit, cable, graphics chip or panel and repair the part that failed, not the whole display or board.
Questions
Before you book
Will I lose my files?
Usually not. In most cases the data is still on the Mac. We recover it before or as part of the repair, and we tell you before doing anything that could affect it.
Are you Apple?
No. We are an independent repair and data recovery workshop with Apple-certified technicians. Unlike a board replacement, our component-level repair keeps your original board and your data.
