Mac data recovery · Logic board repair · London SE1
Mac dead. No backup. No iCloud. Your files are still there.
When a MacBook or iMac dies, most places replace the logic board, and on newer Macs that wipes out your only copy of your files. We repair the original board at component level, boot your Mac and hand your data back.

Repair, don't replace
A dead Mac is usually one failed part on one line.
Think of the logic board as a tube map. Power runs in from USB-C, through the charging chip and power management, to the Apple chip. Your files sit at the end of the data line.
When one component on the power line fails, the whole Mac goes dark, but the data line and your files are untouched. We find that one part under the microscope and replace it. Swap the whole board instead, and on any Mac from 2018 the data line goes with it.
Why a new board can cost you your files
Where your data lives decides how we get it back.
Apple has changed where Macs store data three times since 2007. Every model page on this site tells you which group your Mac is in.
Removable drive or SSD module
Most Macs up to 2017. The data survives a dead board and we read the drive directly.
Soldered SSD
12-inch MacBook and 2016–2017 Touch Bar MacBook Pro. The board must work, or the chips are moved to a donor board.
Encrypted and tied to the board
T2 Macs from 2018 and every Apple silicon Mac. A new board means the files are gone for good. Only repairing the original board brings them back.
Check your Mac
Turn your Mac over. The model number starting with “A” is printed in small text on the base.

Protect your data first.
- Don't agree to a board swapAsk what happens to your data first. On 2018 and later Macs, a new board means your files are gone.
- Keep the old boardIf a board has already been replaced, get the old one back. Your data is still on it.
- Don't erase or reinstallResetting the Mac or reinstalling macOS can overwrite the files we're trying to save.
- After a spill, switch offDon't charge it or keep trying to turn it on. Corrosion spreads while there's power.
- Remember your passwordFor encrypted Macs, we need the Mac login password to unlock your files.

Questions
No backup? Start here.
My Mac won't turn on and I have no backup. Are my files gone?
Usually not. In most dead Macs the data is still on the storage. The question is how to reach it, and that depends on the model. Use the model finder above, or call us with the A-number from the base.
Apple said I need a new logic board. What happens to my data?
On T2 Macs (2018–2020) and all Apple silicon Macs, the storage is encrypted and tied to the original board. A new board comes with blank storage, so anything not in iCloud or a backup is lost. Ask for your old board back and call us before agreeing to a replacement.
Do I need my Apple ID or iCloud password?
No. For encrypted Macs we need the password you use to log in to the Mac itself. Without it, nobody can decrypt the data.
Where is the work done?
Everything is done at our workshop at Unit 1, 80 Willow Walk, London SE1 5SY. Our Beckenham address at 21 Village Way is a drop-off and collection point, by appointment only.
